Kindergarten ~ First Pictures (Level 1)

When children first start exploring with the turtle in Kinderlogo, they love to just press F to move it forward, perhaps turning it now and then. (They can press R to turn the turtle 30 degrees to the right, or L to turn it 30 degrees to the left.) When the turtle leaves one side of the screen, it wraps around to the opposite side.

With little effort, these young children delight in creating what they call wrapping paper. As they explore more, their pictures become more intentional, as in Aryanna’s design. As children gain more control over the turtle, shapes begin to form; check out Zachary’s experiments with circles.

With some children, this move to recognizable shapes and pictures happens quickly. With others, it takes several sessions of playing with the turtle before this important step occurs. It is critical to let this developmental process occur naturally, rather than asking children to “make something” the first time or two that they use the turtle.

All these pictures were created by kindergartners during the first 30 minutes they used Kinderlogo.

These first explorations fill the entire screen. They show a progression toward creating shapes and designs.

Consider the following masterpiece of rows and columns by Haylee. It took her most of the half-hour of the class to complete!
